No longer will tax-exempt hospitals risk their status by sharing their doctors’ offices in their EMR networks. Uncertainty surrounding IRS interpretation of anti-kickback and physician self-referral laws, inhibited hospitals from including doctors in their EMR networks. According to Scott Wallace, the president of the National Alliance for Health IT, this will encourage more doctors to use EHR systems because once an EMR is in place “the incremental cost of adding a physician is fairly low”.
