The word "transition” can mean many different things to many different people. However, the word "transition” can be can be summarized as simply "change” - to change or transition from the current practice work flow, based on a paper medical charting to the newly adopted EMR. This will be a challenge like no other experienced in the practice. An interesting point here is that no two practices are alike. A variety of factors are to be taken into consideration. Beyond personalities within the practice, the primary consideration in most cases is the technical savvy of each practice member from the doctors, nurses and the office staff.

Based on current statistics provided by a multitude of sources, the EMR adoption rate is far behind what most experts would have predicted by this point in quarter 4 of 2010. At this point the US Department of Health and Human Services would be well beyond the most current data suggesting 20.5% of medical practices use and can demonstrate "Meaningful Use.”

ARRA stimulus is scheduled to begin making payments to medical practices that can demonstrate the Meaningful Use beginning January 1, 2011. Only an EMR Vendor that is certified and has the ONC approval list will the practice be eligible to participate in the stimulus.
